The Weekend Project

The weekend project (a little late) Diy display ladders.

Lately I have come across more than the odd blog showing how to use a ladder to decorate with, (such as here)  and I quite like the look, not only are they a great way of storing things such as throws when not in use, but they are also a great way for displaying things too. But  not having a pair of ladders to hand, I got to thinking that actually it wouldn't be that difficult to make a pair, even with my limited DIY skills, so after popping to B&Q to buy me some  lengths of wood, I had a go over the weekend, and this is the result, which I have to say I'm pretty pleased with, and for the cost of about £5.00
So if you fancy having a go your self:

Here is what I used
  • 2  lengths of 12mm x 44 mm and cut the length to how tall you want it,  I kept mine the full length of the wood as we have high ceiling.
  • 1 length of 11 x 33 mm
  • Headless Nails.
  • Glue (optional)
  • Hammer.
  • pencil to mark the place of the rungs.
  • tape measure

To assemble
  • Lay the two lengths of wood on the floor and decide how you want your ladders, equal width apart all the way up, or tapering, I chose tapering, and for tapering it helps to have a tiled kitchen floor to use as a grid!
  • Once decided on how your ladders will look, decide on how far apart you want the ladder rungs (are they rungs or runs?)  cut the the piece of wood  for the rungs to fit, then nail each of these in place, you can use a bit of wood glue for extra security if you want.
  • Then finally paint to the colour of your choice and voilà your own display ladders.

Scrabble tile picture.

Do you like to decorate with letters?  Just lately I'm finding that they are starting to creep into my home, first with the tea chest and the lovely phrase  'It pays to buy good tea' written across it,  then with the huge letter 'S' that was formally a shop window prop, after that came the chunk of wood that was actually destined for the fire, but ended up on the tea chest, seen in the picture below, and the latest is the scrabble picture also seen here below, the idea for the scrabble picture came from here, a lovely blog well worth a visit.

So when I found a scrabble game at a recent visit to the charity shop I thought I would give it a go, although I would of prefered wooden tiles, over all I'm pleased with the final result.  If you fancy giving it a go yourself,  I have since found out, that you can actually buy wooden scrabble tiles from ebay. Happy Sunday all!

Bank holiday weekend project

Here in the UK it will be  long weekend due to a bank holiday on Monday, and every one knows that bank Holidays mean DIY right?  and what a perfect weekend to introduce to you a new section here on This Home Sweet Home, the weekend project, you may recall that I wrote about it here earlier on in the week,  and I'm sure you have plenty of your own ideas, but just in case you need a bit of inspiration here are a few that I found out and about in blog land.

Why not try your hand at this project above using a butterfly punch, and some pretty card, or a heart punch, if you don't have a heart punch an easy way to make sure you get an even heart shape is to draw the heart on a piece of thing card, fold in half and cut around the half of heart on show, then you will get a lovely even heart.

Or if you fancy doing a spot of sewing how about this tea towel table cloth, great for an informal country look.

If you are feeling really adventurous why not hit the car boots/flea markets and see if you can bag a bargain and a diy project all in one! like this great desk seen on Design* sponge.

This weekend i think I might spray some more tin cans which I recently had a go at here, or having spotted this little shelf project (fab blog by the way, well worth a visit, but you will need google translate) I might have a go at making some myself.  So how about you got any projects you would like to share, why not play along,
Here's what to do:
  • Give your weekend project a name and type this in the Name field below.
  • Link to the post on your blog, just the post not the main page.
and that's it,  Happy Weekend (project)

The weekend Project, spray paint tin cans.

I was going to say good morning to all my 100 readers, (yes folks I have reached a small, but what feels like significant mile stone) but having just glanced at the clock on my computer  it reads 12.15, so its a good afternoon!  I would just like to start off by saying thank you  to you all for stopping by and pressing the follow button, and thank you for your comments, you have no idea of how giddy it makes me when I get a new follower and a few comments, (picture little girl squeals and dancing about the room...no really I do) so thank you.
Has the weekend been good to you, I hope so.  I have had a bit of a mixed weekend really, my computer has been giving me trouble for a week or so (hence not much blogging around these parts of late), which meant that trying to access the Internet has been a bit of a hit and miss affair, very frustrating to say the least!  It all started when my kaspersky Internet security ran out and I had to update it to the new one, but for some reason my computer just did not like it at all (I'm still XP which might have something to do with it) it took me a week of frustrating,  sometimes successful and sometimes not successful attempts to get on the Internet, before  then deciding to uninstall the Kaspersky, any way long story short and an email to get a refund, I'm now using a different Internet security thing, and I'M BACK! (hopefully)

In between Internet attempts I did do a spot of DIY in the form of some spray painting, something which I have been meaning to to have a bash at for a while because I keep spotting other bloggers using spray paint to transform old ornaments and things around the home to great success, (check out Layla's Mantle at The Lettered Cottage, and the fab tin on the Colour me Pretty post by Leslie over at decor8blog.)  So I bought my self a small can of spray paint and set to work on a couple of tin cans (we are eating a lot of tined food at the moment.. ha ha) finished off with some pretty Japanese tape, and I have to say that I'm really impressed with the results.  If you are thinking of having a go your self, don't bother with a small can of spray paint, get your self the full size, because take it from me, once you start spraying things and see the results, you will be looking for more items to transform!

In other news, now I'm happily back on  un-interrupted Internet surfing and blog hoping, I thought it might be fun to have a FACEBOOK page for This Home Sweet Home, so Sunday evening was spent setting that up, you can check out some more photos of my cans along with a few other photos, so feel free to stop by and press the like button, or even say hello! Also after getting an invitation (I did request one) I'm  on Pinterest, you can find the Pinterest button along with the Facebook button on the right  hand side of this blog page. So see you all there! .....STOP THE PRESS. I have also signed up to the Blogging your way e-course run by Holly Becker on Decor8blog, I'm so excited to be on this course, gosh I think this week may be a really good one, hope you have a good one too!

What to do with twigs and glue.

If you remember a week or so ago, I started a twig heart from a collection of twigs gathered on a walk, well.... Tadaaaa! Finished heart.

A reader suggested making stars as well, great idea.
